MP Serré applauds historic joint investment in High Speed Internet in Matawa First Nations in Northern Ontario

NICKEL BELT/GREATER SUDBURY – Following today’s announcement by The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, on the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario’s joint investment to bring high speed internet access to the Matawa First Nations in the ‘Ring of Fire’ region of Northern Ontario, Marc Serré, Member of Parliament for Nickel Belt, issued the following statement:
“I would like to applaud Minister Bains, the Government of Canada, Minister Gravelle, and the Government of Ontario for collaborating on this historic joint investment to bring high speed internet access to the Matawa First Nations communities in Northern Ontario. The roughly 880 kilometres of new fibre optic cable that Rapid Lynx Telecommunications will be installing to the five Matawa First Nations communities—currently only accessible by plane—will allow residents to participate fully in the digital economy, create new entrepreneurial opportunities, and enable residents of these communities to access the vast amounts of information and educational opportunities that a connection to high speed internet provides.”
“Being connected to the world around us through the internet is no longer a luxury—it is essential for everyday life. I have no doubt that this $69.2 million dollar joint investment by the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario will create transformational outcomes for the Matawa First Nations, particularly in the way residents are able to access health care, education, skills training, and connecting with friends and family across the country. I am proud of the federal and provincial governments’ initiative to improve quality of life in Northern Ontario, especially for those that live in remote communities, and I encourage both the federal and provincial governments to continue to collaborate on new and innovative ways to improve quality of life in the Ring of Fire region and deliver results for all Northern Ontarians.”
